Though Trattoria Spaghetto has long been one of the best Italian restaurants in New York City, it was started from very humble beginnings.
At the age of 9, Donato DiSaverio started learning the restaurant business in his hometown in Italy. A dedicated worker with an appreciation for quality and attention to detail, he came to the United States with dreams of owning his own restaurant. Learning quickly that he needed to start somewhere, he had to choose between being a chef or a baker. Donato chose the route of the baker and worked at Bleecker Street Bakery for more than 30 years, first becoming a partner and then owner. During this time he developed many recipes still used in restaurant all over New York and neighboring states, including his famous Tartufo (chocolate and vanilla gelato, dipped in rich chocolate, with a cherry center) which has received recognition of quality on multiple occasions.
After purchasing the building, located on the corner of Bleecker and Carmine street; Donato bough the luncheonette 'Italian Home Cooking' located on the first floor. He transformed this tiny place into Trattoria Spaghetto, which has since become one of the best Italian restaurants in NYC. But, people never forgot that little luncheonette. They come in Trattoria Spaghetto, reminiscent of the old days and fond memories of eating there with their parents when they were young. Now, they bring their children to enjoy the family setting, so generation after generation can have similar fond memories of family and food at one of the best NYC Italian restaurants. For the people of Greenwich Village, Trattoria Spaghetto has been a family tradition that shall go on as long as people continue to enjoy quality Italian food and family atmosphere from one of the best New York City Italian restaurants in the area.
